Sacred Datura Seeds (datura metel) - from the Mother Plant

from $4.98
Only 7 left in stock
“When I think of the delicate fragrance of the moonflowers,
I almost feel the coolness and sweetness of the evening.”
- Georgia O’Keeffe

Sacred Datura, known by many names, by many different cultures since ancient times, is one of the sisters of the Nightshade family; the Solanaceae. According to lore, Datura is used for hex-breaking, sleep and protection, but that barely scratches the surface of this nocturnal flower. This mythos-shrouded plant has many names – Thornapple, Devil’s Trumpet, and Witch’s Thimble are just a few of the folk names that it has gained over the centuries.

These seeds come from a literal gift from nature. Once upon a time, a bird, visiting our garden, dropped a seed on a bit of earth. To our delight, velvety leaves soon waved at us, heralding one of the most magnificent plants we've ever been blessed to interact with. The leaves were vigorous, beautifully colored, and grew cloaked with enormous white flowers. To be near it in the evenings and early mornings was to be spellbound by the intoxicating perfume it released into the air; a fascinating mix of rose, jasmine, and bright lemon. We've dubbed her the Mother Plant and have cultivated her children, offering them to you. Celebrate the moonflower blooming in the glow of the night sky as they open slowly, untwisting and spreading their petals like trumpets heralding the moon.

Planting info
• Flower Type: Perennials / Self-sowing Annuals (You can prevent self sowing by pinching off the spent flowers after they've faded.)
• USDA Zones: 6 - 11
• Height: 12 - 120 inches
• Bloom Season: Summer through fall
• Environment: Full Sun
• Soil Type: a variety of soils, even in dry, poor soil, well-drained – in fact, we have found that our Mother Plant prefer sandy soil.
• Planting Seeds: 1/4" deep and 24" inches apart

Datura is Belladonna’s seductive sister whose sweet-smelling and delicate flowers hypnotize and allure those who are pulled close by her beauty. A closer look reveals her thorn-covered fruit hidden beneath dark green leaves and gossamer blooms, her flowers are always a sight to behold as they bloom with approaching dusk.

Please note: Caution should be taken when growing Datura or moonflowers in areas with small children or pets. While the flowers are not harmful if touched or smelled, the plant is not meant for ingestion and is considered toxic.
